United States threatens to attack Iran's 52 targets; China cannot take:military measures

Global Times-Global Network report] On January 6, 2020, Foreign Ministryspokesman Geng Shuang presided over a regular press conference, the maincontent is as follows.

Reporter: The US-Iran conflict has escalated. The United States has saidthat if Iran attacks any US citizen or asset, the United States will attack 52Iranian targets. Iran said that about 35 U.S. targets in the area werewithin Iraq's attack range. How does China view the current situation?

Geng Shuang: China attaches great importance to the current situation in theMiddle East. The situation in the Middle East Gulf region has furtherdeteriorated, which no one wants to see. Ensuring peace and stability inthe region is vital to the entire world.

Power politics is unpopular and unsustainable. The current US militaryadventurism violates the basic norms of international relations and hasincreased tension and instability in the region. China has always opposedthe use of force in international relations. There is no way out formilitary means, and extreme pressure is simply not feasible.

China holds that all parties should earnestly abide by the purposes andprinciples of the Charter of the United Nations and the basic norms ofinternational relations, respect the sovereignty and independence of allcountries, and maintain peace and stability in the Middle East and the Gulfregion. We urge the United States not to abuse force, and call on allparties concerned to exercise restraint, avoid the escalation of the situation, return to the track of dialogue and consultation as soon as possible, and easetensions.

China will continue to adhere to an objective and fair position and play aconstructive role in maintaining peace and security in the Middle East and theGulf region.
